Alexander Chandler attends Fort Worth Kimbell Art Museum Cosmopolitan Gala

Alexander Chandler supports the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth and recently attended the Kimbell Cosmopolitan’s group annual Gala themed Town & Country. I am not sure where the country entered into this because everyone was in a suit. The Cosmopolitan group is for young professionals under 45. It was a pleasant event catered by Bonnell’s with Jon Bonnell carving beef himself. There was also a band which I remember little about, but they were pretty average.

What was exciting was the exhibit from the private collections of Texas from Master painters. We got a rare look at works of art that are rarely put on display. They had a contest to keep us interested which was a sort of hide and seek game in the gallery. They gave us little booklets with mini snapshots of scenes from various paintings and we had to identify the name of the work and the artist. This was also a way to get us to look at the art. When we were done we put our slips of paintings we identified into various buckets to win a prize. The best part of the evening is I won one of the best prizes. It was a painting by local artist Matt Clarke. It would be considered modern art. Kind of hard to describe but what the artist did was put paints on a block and then press glass to the paint which then spread the paint around and let it dry. What was left is an interesting pattern of the paints. It could have been a picture of dogs playing cards and I would have been happy just to be a winner.

My guest was Marisa Farha who is the site representative of La Cantera which is West Fort Worth’s most private luxury community.

Alexander Chandler hears Karl Rove at Fort Worth Club

Alexander Chandler attended a lecture at the Fort Worth club with former President Bush advisor Karl Rove. Whatever your politics are it was interesting to hear some of the inside stories. In particular, the recounted of the terrible day in American history 9/11. Most people I talk to remember where they were and Karl Rove was in an elementary school while the President was talking to students when the news arrived.

Karl Rove said he scrambled to find a TV in the school and when President Bush saw the smoking towers he said,” We are at war. Get me the FBI and the Vice President”. He then told us of the trip back to Washington after a couple of detours and when they were flying by the smoldering Pentagon in Marine One the President pointed and said to Karl Rove, “Take a look. That is the face of war in the 21st Century”. The tale was riveting to hear firsthand what happened. We are all Americans and should never forget the horror of that day and the new reality that we do have enemies.

Karl Rove also talked about his book, Courage and Consequence, which he says he wrote because he was “15 steps from the White House.” Mr. Rove is from Texas and he recognized local Fort Worth powerhouses like Dee Kelly who he called “the king”. Dee Kelly is senior partner at Kelly, Hart and Hallman, Fort Worth’s most prestigious law firm. He then turned to politics which was expected and gave his perspective on such issues as health care which he basically said was about power and control and would bankrupt America. Newt Gingrich said similar things to say only a month before at another lecture at the Fort Worth Club.

This event was sponsored by the World Affairs Council of which Alexander Chandler is a member. I feel it is important to be active and hear what people in positions of authority and have inside knowledge opinions on various issues. The council lecture series is now being held at the Fort Worth Club and has speakers from all points of view. What is amazing is the list of speakers they have recently had and have lined up. Fort Worth is a growing city and one of the fastest growing in the United States and is getting plenty of recognition. Newt Gingrich Speaking at the Ft. Worth Chamber of Commerce

Newt Gingrich recently spoke to the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce and put today’s politics in a historical perspective with George Washington. Whether you are a Democrat or Republican, the former Speaker of the House had words of wisdom for us all. Speaker Gingrich is a historian by nature and recently came out with a book To Try Men’s Souls. Attached is a picture of Speaker Gingrich oblivious to Alexander Chandler hanging out in the background.

Speaker Gingrich spoke of our war in Afghanistan as “the long war” and called it a “struggle against those that want to destroy us”. He commented that three things that are needed to improve the progress and in our struggle and the lives of Afghanis is improved communications, roads, and the assemblage of an organized Afghan army.

George Washington, according to Gingrich, is our greatest President and provides lessons that citizens and politicians should live by. Speaker Gingrich commented that it is a Presidents responsibility to “tell the truth, not appease the ignorant” and that “there is not enough oil in the world to justify an American President to bow to a Saudi Prince”.

Other topics addressed by Speaker Gingrich was that of health care where he said, “None of the bills proposed by Congress have anything to do with health care. They have everything to do with power”. This statement generally applies to both parties with varied vested interests.

Discipline was another topic and Gingrich spoke of George Washington’s extraordinary discipline. George Washington is a favorite topic of Alexander Chandler. Alexander is a direct descendant of George Washington’s sister and Colonel Fielding who was a field commander during the revolutionary war. This makes George Washington Alexander’s ancestral uncle.
